Warning: Political rant ahead
Aug. 31st, 2004 04:55 pmIn repsonse to hearing "my vote doesn't count" and "politics just isn't my thing" too many times...
Your vote does make a difference! The level of political apathy in this country never ceases to amaze me. The goings on down in Canberra impact every little corner of your life, from whether you're going to be able to afford to buy a house before you're 50 to your recreational habits to your health and your education to the kind of future you'd want to live in. GET INVOLVED: POLITICS IS IMPORTANT!
Now personally, i'm not voting for either major party, Labour (Latham) or Liberal (Howard), though Mr. Latham will get my preferences as I can't consciably vote for Howard. I still have my reservations about him though: his youth doesn't bother me, but his tendancy not to draw on experience within his own party does. He seems a little bombastic, but mostly I'm seriously unthrilled with the Labour pary's decision to just follow the Liberal party line on gay marriages, the Free Trade Agreement and Tasmania's old growth forests. Labour is supposed to be a real alternative to the Liberals, not a watered-down version of the same rhetoric!!!
Politics is everyone's thing - if you live in this country you have a responsibility to involve yourself in determining its future. I don't care who you vote for, just be able to justify why you have chosen to vote for them. What values helped you make that choice? What direction do you want the country to move in? What do you see as more important, economic growth and stability, or greater social justice? Please think about these things, read the newspaper here and there so you know what wach party stands for and cast your vote for reasons you belive in.
Sorry for the rant, but politics is too important for apathy. This is not intended as a dig at anyone in particular, so please don't take offence. Please think about what I'm saying - this is something I feel passionately about.
