My home city, the lovely Brisbane, is going through
severe flooding, with an extreme flood event hitting over the next couple of days.
For now my friends and family are all safe, but the next few days will be nerve-wracking as we all wait to see how high the water goes and hope that
Wivenhoe Dam holds out against the flood surge it was built to hold back (a capacity that's not been tested before). Too many lives have already been lost in the upper catchment and in
freak flash flooding in Toowoomba (who knew that the top of a mountain range could flood catastrophically?). What's more, the floods in South-East Queensland are only the most recent in a month-long saga that has seen two-thirds of Queensland inundated and declared disaster zones.
Some of my friends are stranded far away from home. Some of my friends are evacuating. Some of my friends are volunteering to fill sandbags. Some of my friends are taking people in and giving them shelter. But all of my friends and family are currently safe
I'm hoping with all my heart that they'll stay safe, that the dam will hold, that the floods won't be as bad as predicted, and that life will go back to normal as soon as possilble.
My friends are amazing and I love them.
