A day of surprises
May. 13th, 2005 03:16 pmWell, what a day for unexpected outcomes! Whislt I've mostly been mooching about the office half-heartedly, the world has been getting on with happening!
Highlights of reading todays paper:
1) the Labor party actually seems to have policies that differentiate them from the Liberals that they are willing to (temporarily) sacrifice poll popularuty to fight for!
2) John Howard has been instrumental in developing a new policy to protect more of Tasmania's old growth forests than anyone could have dreamt plausible for a Liberal government. The resulting package should avoid industry job losses plus guarantees protection and National Parks status for the Styx Valley and the Tarkine Wilderness! *jumps up and down, squealing in joy*
And in other intersting events, Melbourne Water (my employer of desire post the Launceston conference) has just adverties two vacanies for aquatic ecology types! Now, competition for such coveted positions will be fierce, but I can at least give it a shot! Exciting times!
The upcoming weekend will again be spent writing job applications as I have given myself a bit of a mental break and not worked on any during the week. This means that I won't be going to see Lab4 at the Arena this Saturday, which is a bit of a pity, but I don't really mind as I'm too tired and stressed to really enjoy it. This also means I'll be bursting at the seams to party at Mayhem in June, when two of my favourite Melbourne fiends will be joining me *bouces around* Also on this weekend is the annual Brisbane Mediaeval Fair, at Musgrave Park. If I go well with the applications I might treat myslef to a visit - I have been on previous years and the photo opportunities have me salivating! If I don't go it won't be too much drama though, as there are bound to be a few people there I'd prefer to avoid. Ex-boyfriends and members of the UQ Mediaeval Society, all of questionable sanity and morality *gulp*
All in all, I'm feeling remarkably Zen at the moment. I have the sensation that the universe is peering over my shoulder, and if I put the right energy in to the right places, the outcomes will be exactly what I need. In more practical terms, this means doing a great effort on the applications for the jobs I'm interested in, making job-hunting my top priority, and I feel like the job I'll end up with is the one that will take me in the best direction. As a result, I'm not at all stressed about the employemnt business - my only source of stress is the lack of enough hours in the day to dedicate to the applications and complete everything else I need to do! Off on field work for a week soon, which doesn't really aid time availability (at least unless I magically acquire a lab top and a need for less sleep!). So I'm busy and a touch manic, but I'm rather cheery too. All is remarkably well and the universe is still full of pleasant surprises!
Happy Friday!
