The North West Bay River begins ont he south-western side of Mount Wellington, where water seeps and drips through the alpine peat. After rain or snow it's a powerful little river, rushing down the mountain and worrying at the dolerite, carving boulders from the bedrock.

Now, in the dry season, it's just an alpine brook, it's waters cold, clear and calm as it burbles and and worbules it's way to the sea.

I didn't get far along it. I hadn't planned to head up to the mountain today, as I was meeting friends in town. But as the day wore on I grew restless and eventually headed for the hills, hop-scrambling my way from boulder to boulder for an hour in my inadequately-sandalled feet.

North West Bay River: I'll be back!
