It is possible to let down an interested party gently, honestly and with respect. I know, because I've just done it.
It takes going out of your way, it takes being honest with yourself, it takes an awareness of how you present to others and it takes the determination to do what's right as opposed to what's easy.
It's not easy; it's awkward and uncomfortable, and that's further reason it's so important to do.
Don't play with other people's feelings. Do what's decent: be honest, be respectful, be kind. Other people are worth it.
In other news, I make a fabulous apple crumble. Oh yes I do. *nom*
