What is this armageddon creeping over the hills? Where there's smoke, there's
Sunscreen lingers in the lines on my skin. Summer is here early this year, exclaimed by the pillar of smoke that appeared to our north this afternoon. Following the plume, we fond ourselves in Keperra, where spot fires were breaking out close to homes in the lee of the main blaze. Light aircraft and water-dumping helicopters circles overhead and bewildered residents wondered how they would get home.
Nothing burns like Australia. Eucalypts are full of oil fuel that burns long and hot, and after 5 years of drought the undergrowth is bone dry this year. Last summer we got off lgihtly, so there's a good chance of a bad fire season ahead. In Brisbane, bushland intersperses the outer suburbs and Brisbane Forest Park outlines the inner west. Fire is a very real danger for urban dwellers in most of our neighbouring suburbs. Hopefully, this is the last time this summer I'll see the flames so close to houses.
