Caffeine and valium
Jul. 16th, 2004 06:28 amIt's 6:28am. THe sun is not yet risen, but the gentle dawn glow is filtering down through clouds forming a halo on the horizon. My reluctant wakefulness the effect of coffee and necessity, for I am at work. I had to get a lift in with Alex this morning and he leaves at 6am, so it was up at 5 for me. Where is my usual bicycle transport? At home in the garage, of little use to me today. You see, I did something horrendous to my back and riding is out of the question, along with the walk to the bus stop - my other option for non-5am starts.
These days your average GP takes back pain seriously. I have codeine containing pain killers (panadeine forte), benzodiazapam (valium) and anti-inflammatories (Voltaren rapid), so I'm peacefully floaty and struggling to keep my eyes open. The physiotherapist thinks I'll be right as rain in a few days - apparently I injured a few of my intercostal muscles (the ones between the ribs) and the swelling there was pulling the ribs further out of line, making my muscles over-stretched and spasming. Yesterday's exploits involved taking half an hour to figure out how to get out of bed. Five minutes this morning was bliss!
So I'm in the office, with company at least an hour away and a fuzzy brain unwilling to focus on much for long. I'm even having trouble typing this. But hey, I'm mobile, and after another coffee I should be functional enough to get some work done. Unbelievably it's Friday and I realise I missed two days of work this week (well, I worked from home on Tuesday, which, while productive for me, looks kinda bad) and have missed one day a week for various reasons for the four weeks previous. Eeep! This absence is a combination of being sick/run down and generally having days where more important things than work needed to be dealt with. I would have just taken a week off on leave but I'm reluctant to do that until I have a car to get around in, so we'll just have to wait.
I need a bed in my office. Valium + codeine > caffeine.
Sleepy...
