Poster bird Weekends, eh? I'd almost forgotten you could use them for something other than recovering from the week just past. Now that's two in a row that have involved doing things just for fun and without the inescapable consequence of exhaustion.

Last weekend we went out on the Friday night to a masquerade burlesque ball. It was my first real experience of burlesque, and I have to say that the personality and wit of the performer count for an awful lot. It's a very fine line between art and sleeze.

The following Saturday we drove out to Port Arthur with my uncle, aunt, cousin and cousin's son for a run-down on family history and to help my cousin out with the rather challenging young Master F. F's a bit short on dad-shaped attention and loves spending time with Alex, which also gives my cousin a much-need break. So we all trudged around the historical site in the miserable weather while my uncle told tales of the mischief he got up to as a kid, and corrected the "official" version of history the site provides (my grandfather founded the original Port Arthur museum and dad and his siblings grew up running around the historical site). On the way home we dropped in on another of Dad's brothers who still lives in Port Arthur, and unfortunately we picked up the flu while we were there. Well, unfortunately for Alex, anyway, as I'd had the jab and didn't get sick, but the poor boy was knocked out for a week.

This weekend saw only a single outing: last night we went to the Theatre Royal to see the Bell Shakespear Company's production of Twelfth Night. Since Hobart counts as "rural Australia", the subsidised tour rolls into town once a year, and it was too good an opportunity to miss. A really different style of production that was seriosly funny with a very talented cast. Ironically, the first Saturday night I've had plans in ages, I also won free tickets to see the Tas Symphony Orchestra play Viennese classics, but had to pass that up!

Although the rest of the weekend was spent at home, the weather was largely lovely and I managed to get some work done in the garden at long last. Three months of deep neglect was really starting to show! Now I have hope for a lovely little garden come the spring.

I hope your weekend was lovely too!
